Cheesy prawn bake


serves 4
6 hard-boiled eggs
25 g (1 oz) butter or margarine
25 g (1 oz) plain flour
300 ml (1/2 pt) milk
3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
3 tbsp chopped fresh dill (optional)
salt and pepper
1/4 tsp dry mustard
300 g (10 oz) peeled prawns
3 tbsp grated Emmenthal or Cheddar cheese


1. Preheat oven. 230°C/450°F/gas 8. Shell and slice the hard-boiled eggs.

2. Melt butter or . margarine in a saucepan and stir in flour. Cook, stirring, for 1 min. Remove from heat and gradually add milk. Bring to the boil, stirring until thickened.

3. Stir in salt, pepper, . mustard, parsley, and dill, if using.

4. Arrange prawns . and eggs in an ovenproof dish. Pour over sauce and sprinkle top with grated cheese.

5. Bake for 15 - 20 mins, until top is golden and bubbling.

For a spicier flavour, replace the mustard with a pinch of curry powder.

I made this and my whole family loved it-even my daughter who doesn't usually eat seafood! It's a great recipe for the whole family! I hope you enjoy it as much as i did!

I consider myself to be quite a good cook so I don't think my skills were the problem here - I found this incredibly bland and quite unpleasant and I put the lot in the bin!!!

Try sprinkling potato crisps on top before cheese. And add a pinch of chilli onto the prawns. Lovely!

My wife (sharon) made this and the whole famiy enjoyed it! definitly not bland or unpleasant obvously my wife cooked it properly! Perhaps its time I married the old girl!!

I cooked it and added some cooked pasta and had it with salad, wasn't sure what my husband would make of it, but he really loved it. He commented on it 2 or 3 times. Wasn't bland at all, wonder if Karen added the dill? The dill gave it a really nice taste, didn't add the 3tbsp as recommended as I only had enough for 2 but gave a good taste. Will try this again.

Didn't have dill used tbs of crush fennel seeds and half onion family loved it!

If you like creamed sauces on fish, you will probably like this. We don't like creamed sauces - not enough flavour. This was edible, but not enough flavour for us. Adding lemon juice when served helped. Next time I will make a proper curry sauce to put prawns and artichoke hearts in, top with cheese and bake. Now THAT will be good

Hi Jo,Same as you, I will just buy the readily aaablvile packet from the markets, why take the trouble to make one right? I always want to cook this but as always, something came first and i had to postpone it till later date, haha! It sounds so simple to cook and i will definitely try to make it onw day.
