1. Cut the bread and butter into strips and arrange, buttered side up, in layers in a greased ovenproof dish, sprinkling the layers with the fruit and sugar.
2. Heat the milk, but do not allow it to boil.
3. Whisk the eggs lightly and pour the milk on to them, stirring all the time. Strain the mixture over the bread,
4. sprinkle some nutmeg on top and let the pudding stand for 1/4 hour.
5. Bake in the oven at 180°C (350°F) mark 4 for 30-40 minutes, until set and lightly browned.
