Barbecue sauce is a popular accompaniment to grilled meat, beefburgers and other meat dishes.
2 tbsp (1 oz) 25 g butter
1 tablespoon oil
1 onion, finely chopped
14 oz (400 g) can chopped tomatoes
3 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons mustard
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon chilli powder
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1. Heat the butter and oil in a pan and gently fry the onion until soft.
2. Add all remaining ingredients, bring to the boil and simmer for about 20 minutes.
3. If you like a smooth sauce, process in a blender or a food processor until smooth.
