1. Cook yams in skins until nearly tender.
2. Peel and halve.
3. Arrange in greased shallow 1 quart baking pan.
4. Combine sugar, water, salt, and butter; pour over yams.
5. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 15 minutes, basting occasionally.
6. Sprinkle top with coconut; bake 10 minutes longer, or until lightly browned.
